PSP often gives an error code and many automatically think it is the laser that is causing the error codes. The laser may not need to be replaced at all. Another fix is easier and cheaper.

As with any form of laser there is always the issue of a dirty laser that will not allow it to read properly. Just the simple collection of dust on or near the laser will have it tossing off error codes since the laser is not able to read anything correctly. Before you decide to replace the laser try some steps that could fix your PSP.

1. Shut off the PSP console and completely powered off. Open the UMD drive door which is located on the back of the PSP near the silver logo. Remove any game or movie in the game system.

2. Gently blow into the drive area to remove any dirt or dust collected in the unit. Take a Q-tip dipped in rubbing alcohol and lightly wipe the laser eye. This will remove any dust particles forming on the laser eye.

Be very careful not to apply any pressure to the laser eye or you may damage it. It is a very sensitive device. If you damage the laser eye you will need to have the PSP repaired professionally.

3. Remove the battery pack of the PSP. Replace the battery pack in about 5 minutes.

4. Replace the UMD game back into the console. Turn on the power to the PSP.

5. Turn on the game system. See if the PSP goes to the game icon. Once the PSP recognizes the initial startup it will then display the UMD icon. If these both are displayed you have fixed your PSP.

The standard error experienced with the PSP involves the laser eye. Try this process to see if you can clean the dirty eye.
